Michigan Leads in Livability Issues
On the state level, the Aging Institute of Michigan, through the generous support of AARP, launched the new "MI Home Town" website to showcase state wide livability initiatives and to help communities move their initiatives forward by promoting best practices in the field of aging in place. Leaders from across Michigan will gather the second week of November to inform and update on Michigan's current livability projects and to discuss challenges and opportunities that will result in Best Practice recommendations from the group. Other agenda items will include launching the mihometown.org online forum, identification and involvement of new projects and initiatives emerging in Michigan, and planning for the 2007 Michigan Senior Summit Conference on Aging where communities and leaders will be recognized for their local achievements and new initiatives can learn from the Best of the Best in Michigan.

MI Home Town.org is a showcase for community development initiatives in Michigan, promoting cities that are accessible, comfortable and attractive to boomers and their aging parents. These model programs are transforming Michigan's future in five diverse communities: Communities for a Lifetime in Grand Rapids, Blueprint for Aging in Ann Arbor, Aging in Place Initiative, Battle Creek, Elder Friendly Communities in Gaylord and Aging in Community in Traverse City.

Communities all across Michigan are beginning to open their eyes to the benefits of serving our rapidly growing 50 years of age, or better, population and it is bringing communities together in new ways with a shared vision of the future.

Recognizing and supporting new, grass-roots community initiatives that address livability issues is vital to the growth and sustainability of local projects. When new projects or programs are identified, the MiHomeTown web site is designed to help assist community leaders with education, information and additional resources that offer their programs a true helping hand.

In turn, through collaboration and sharing on the new MIHomeTown website, Michigan can benefit from learning about new and innovative projects and programs that may also serve to fill existing gaps or niches in the senior care continuums of larger communities or urban areas.
