Traverse City: Aging in Community Initiative is a community-wide evaluation project that involves public and private sectors, community leaders, volunteers, and those who work and reside in the Traverse city area. The purpose of the project is to help encourage Traverse City to take a new look at our community and out neighborhoods. Although the evaluation is written from the perspective of older persons, the assets, features, and services addressed promote livability for persons of all ages and abilities.
Burnham Brook has joined a national initiative sponsored by Partners for Livable Communities and the National Association or Area Agencies on Aging to work with cities and counties over an 18 month period to facilitate a community dialogue on "aging in place," and to assist community leaders in developing an action plan to ensure programs and services are in place so that communities are good places to grow old.
The Blueprint for Aging builds community with healthy, independent and honored seniors. The Blueprint for Aging is a diverse coalition of community members and representatives from over 40 public, public, and nonprofit organizations who have actively worked for over five years to assist Washtenaw County in becoming more responsive to its older residents.
Over the next fifteen years there will be a 41% increase in the number of residents age 65 and over. That’s 500,000 additional people age 65 and over by the year 2020. The majority of these seniors will be vital, independent residents who can be a source of civic, social and financial capital. They can serve as volunteers and activists, board members and elected officials, funders and community leaders. But communities must make a commitment to “ease the way” for this population group. The Certified Elder Friendly Community project will help communities achieve that goal.
